Non-Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Parasomnias and Migraine: A Role of Orexinergic Projections

2018

Introduction: Sleep and migraine share a common pathophysiological substrate, although the underlying mechanisms are unknown. The serotonergic and orexinergic systems are both involved in the regulation of sleep/wake cycle, and numerous studies show that both are involved in the migraine etiopathogenesis. These two systems are anatomically and functionally interconnected. Our hypothesis is that in migraine a dysfunction of orexinergic projections on the median raphe (MR) nuclei, interfering with serotonergic regulation, may cause Non-Rapid Eye Movement parasomnias, such as somnambulism. Hypothesis/theory: Acting on the serotonergic neurons of the raphe nuclei, the dysfunction of orexinergic…

Pain-induced alterations in the individual non-esterified fatty acids in serum.

1979

Changes of individual non-esterified fatty acids in serum were studied in 7 metabolically healthy patients, suffering from idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia, who underwent electrocoagulation of gasserian ganglion under neurolepthypalgesia. The mean concentration of fatty acids increased by about 40% during the strong surgical pain stimulus. The increased lipolysis affected all individual fatty acids in proportion to the ratio of their presence in adipose tissue. The mechanism of pain-induced activation of lipase and possible consequences of alterations in individual non-esterified fatty acids are discussed.

Amyloidoma of the gasserian ganglion as a cause of symptomatic neuralgia of the trigeminal nerve: report of three cases.

1993

Three cases of symptomatic neuralgia of the trigeminal nerve due to an amyloidoma in the gasserian ganglion are described. The correct diagnosis was not made prior to histological examination of the surgical biopsy specimens. Medical history and clinical observation led to the diagnosis of a malignant process of the nasal cavities in the first patient; of an inflammatory dental focus in the second patient; and of multiple sclerosis in the third patient. CT findings were normal in cases 1 and 2; in case 3, a schwannoma was suspected from the CT appearances. In case 1, MRI had not been performed; in cases 2 and 3, MRI revealed a tumour mass which was also considered to be a schwannoma. Histol…

Atrial natriuretic factor-like immunoreactivity in spinal cord and in primary sensory neurons of spinal and trigeminal ganglia of guinea-pig: correla…

1989

Atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) is a cardiac hormone with various functions in body homeostasis. It is also processed in the brain and in the peripheral nervous system where it appears to play a role as a neuromodulator. Little is known about the presence of ANF throughout the spinal cord of the guinea-pig. We therefore examined the distribution of ANF and its possible interrelation with primary sensory afferents in this species. Using enzyme- and fluorescence-immunohistochemistry on deparaffinized sections, ANF-like immunoreactivity was found to be present in nerve fibers in laminae I/II of the spinal cord and in neurons of spinal and trigeminal ganglia. Tachykinins and ANF coexisted in ve…

GE-25-like immunoreactivity in the rat eye.

2012

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the presence and distribution of the chromogranin A-derived peptide GE-25 in the rat eye. The molecular form detected by the GE-25 antiserum was evaluated in the rat trigeminal ganglion, retina and remaining tissues of the rat eye by means of Western blots and the distribution pattern of GE-25-like immunoreactivity was studied in the rat eye and rat trigeminal ganglion by immunofluorescence. One single band of approximately 70 kDa was stained in the trigeminal ganglion and retina which represents the uncleaved intact chromogranin A indicating that the proteolytic processing of chromogranin A to GE-25 is limited in these tissues. Sparse GE-25-like imm…

Correlation of virus replication, cytokine (TNF-? and IL-1) producing cells, neuronal necrosis and inflammation after intranasal infection of mice wi…

1995

The number of TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta producing cells was investigated during the acute replication phase of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in trigeminal ganglia after intranasal infection with strains of different virulence. The highly virulent strain WAL replicated strongly and induced many cytokine producing cells early in the ganglia. The low virulent strain HFEM replicated less, only few cytokine producing cells were detected late. The thymidine-kinase negative (TK-) virus 1301 did not replicate but produced some lymphocytic inflammation. The higher the virulence of strains of HSV-1 or -2 was, the stronger was the extent of histopathological lesions; moreover, a dissociation in time betwee…

Substance P- and calcitonin gene-related peptide-like immunoreactive neurons in the rat trigeminal ganglion — with special reference to meningeal and…

1992

Summary The distribution of perikarya showing substance P- ( SP ) or calcitonin gene-related peptide-like inununoreactivity ( CGRP-LI ) in the rat trigeminal ganglion ( TG ) were investigated by means of immunohistochemical methods. Approximately 50% of the perikarya contain CGRP while SP-Ll was observed in 1/3 of the cells. IR fibres were seen to leave the ganglion via the ophtalmic, maxillary, and mandibular nerves. The combination of peptide histochemistry and retrograde labelling of cells in the ganglion following injection of a fluorescent tracer into the pineal gland reveals that few SP- or CGRP-LI trigeminal neurons innervate the pineal gland. In contrast, the vast majority of perika…

PE-11, a peptide derived from chromogranin B, in the rat eye.

2010

The aim of the study was to investigate the presence and distribution of PE-11, a peptide derived from chromogranin B, in the rat eye. For this purpose, newborn rats were injected with a single dosage of 50mg/kg capsaicin subcutaneously under the neck fold and after three months, particular eye tissues were dissected and the concentration of PE-11-like immunoreactivity was determined by radioimmunoassay. Furthermore, PE-11-like immunoreactivities were characterized in an extract of the rat eye by reversed phase HPLC. Then, the distribution pattern of PE-11 was investigated in the rat eye and rat trigeminal ganglion by immunofluorescence. As a result, PE-11 was present in each tissue of the …

Conventional radiofrequency treatment in five patients with trigeminal neuralgia

2010

Introduction: In trigeminal neuralgia, when drug treatment proves ineffective, other management options must be considered. In this context, conventional radiofrequency of Gasser’s ganglion is a safe and effective alternative. Material and Methods: We describe 5 patients with long-evolving trigeminal neuralgia subjected to conventional radiofrequency according to the Sweet technique, with a follow-up of two years. Results: Pain relief was complete after two months in all cases. One patient suffered an unexpected episode of nausea, vomiting and foul odor sensation that subsided after three days of rest and drug treatment. Three patients described non-painful hypoesthesia in the region of the…
